VANITHA SAMAJAM
In 1984, the N.S.S. Vanitha Samajam at Punnorkode was established under registration number 800. By 1989-90, with the active participation of the women from families associated with the Karayogam, the Samajam had diversified its activities and achieved significant progress. This success enabled the Samajam to secure a respectable position at both the Karayogam and union levels through its focused efforts to ensure financial stability.
Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, the Samajam has 190 active members. General body meetings are held every month on the second Saturday at 2 PM, preceded by a committee meeting on the previous Friday to prepare the agenda. Each general meeting discusses important days of the month, highlighting their significance in one or two sentences. Additionally, an annual class is conducted on topics of contemporary relevance by inviting experts in the respective fields.
The members of the Samajam engage in certain production activities. During the Onam season, the preparation and sale of snacks like upperi (banana chips) gain prominence. The members also utilize the Karayogam’s idle lands for small-scale agricultural ventures.
To commemorate the 20th anniversary, the Samajam constructed a hall adjacent to the Karayogam’s main hall, named the Vimshathi Hall, which is rented out. The necessary furniture, including chairs and desks, was procured by the Samajam. A long-cherished dream of having its own office was realized under the guidance of the Karayogam. The Karayogam office was enhanced with truss work and a ceiling, transforming it into a functional office space.
The Samajam continues to uphold traditional cultural practices, notably the grand celebration of Thiruvathira during the Malayalam month of Dhanu, maintaining its original charm and rituals every year. A medical assistance fund has been established to support financially weaker members, with the interest from the fund distributed annually to the eligible members. The Samajam also plays a vital role in strengthening the activities of the Balasamajam (children’s organization) and conducting spiritual classes effectively.
The exemplary leadership and continuous support of Karayogam President Sri M.R. B.V. Kaimal, who has been a guiding force for the Samajam, is remembered with gratitude on this occasion. As the Samajam celebrates its 40th anniversary, its members continue to march forward with pride, orderliness, and dedication.
