KARAYOGAM

Nair Service Society is a unit that was registered on November 22, 1949 with registration number 1678. Initially, its area of operation included Punnorcode, Kaithakkadu, Choorakode, Njaralloor, Erumeli, and Pazhamthottam. Later, when new Karayogams were formed in the combined areas, the area of operation was reduced to include only Punnorcode, Pazhamthottam and a few parts of Njaralloor, and we have been carrying out the Karayogam activities.

The period from 1949 to 1964 was the formative phase of the Karayogam. As for the Karayogam, the period from 1965 onwards up to 1984 can be described as a phase of growth and prosperity. This was made possible by the effective leadership. Notably, K.G. Narayana Menon served as the Administrative head of the Karayogam. He and his fellow workers identified the needs of the community and the locality.

During this period, the Sri Bhadra Bhagavati temple was consecrated on a 75-cent plot owned by the Karayogam. The temple's presence sparkled spiritual awakening and enthusiasm among the people, who came to worship and seek the goddess's blessings. The temple's affairs are managed efficiently under the leadership of the temple committee.

The period from 1984 onwards is the third phase, which is marked by comprehensive development. Changes have occurred on all aspects. The leadership has succeeded in maintaining the community's stability and integrity. The elderly people have been brought into the fold of Karayogam activities. Disciplined activities have been led by former President Shri.M.R.B.V. Kaimal sir, who is remembered with respect. The younger generation has been involved in community and social activities and knowledge has been imparted to them. The Bala Samajam and Vanitha Samajam have been actively involved in daily activities, making women partners in these activities.

To ensure the smooth functioning of the Karayogam, its activities are divided into 8 regions, covering 203 houses. Members are elected from each region to represent their respective areas. At least one male and female members from each family should take Karayogam membership. Every individual above 18 years can become a member of the Karayogam. Children between 5 and 18 years can join the Bala Samajam. The Karayogam committee meets on the first Sunday of every month and a general body meeting is held on the second Sunday. The financial transactions of the Karayogam are transparent and the accounts are presented at the general body meetings for approval. This system ensures accountability, transparency and active community participation in the Karayogam’s activities.

Every year in May, the annual accounts and budgets for the upcoming year are presented at the Karayogam general body meeting, where suggestions and approval are obtained. Local audits and audits from Taluk Unions are also conducted regularly. Decisions are made for the community's welfare and implemented without fail, ensuring complete discipline and co-operation from all members.

For the welfare of its members, the Karayogam has been implementing various programs. The organization takes responsibility for conducting weddings within the community. In case of death, the Karayogam follows the cremation protocol approved by the NSS. From the day after the demise until the completion of rituals, the Karayogam takes care of the necessary arrangements. Notably, the organization discontinued expensive and unnecessary funeral rites and customs, 35 years ago.

The Karayogam has established endowments and the income generated from these is utilized for educational awards and medical assistance to needy patients. A family survey is conducted every five years and the report is maintained. Additionally, financial assistance is provided to deserving individuals through the President's Relief Fund, which is funded by donations. This fund provided timely financial support to those in need.

Along with the community activities, the Karayogam has also been actively involved in social causes, receiving wholehearted support from the community. Notably, during the 2018 flood, under the Karayogam's leadership, over 20 houses were renovated and handed over to flood-affected families in various parts of the district. Food and essential items were also distributed. Additionally, a contribution of Rs.1 lakh was made to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund.

The Karayogam's Golden jubilee year saw the completion of a 3,000-square-feet jubilee hall and auditorium. The inauguration was done by Shri.P.K.Narayana Panicker, former NSS General Secretary, on November 21, 1999.
